This is the longest shore excursion we offer (10-11 hours with 6 hours of driving), requiring precise timing and experienced logistics management. Your driver is a long-distance specialist with certification for the Dead Sea highway. The vehicle is equipped with a cooler, first aid kit, and emergency supplies. GPS tracking monitors your position throughout the day, and the operations team receives automatic alerts for delays. Two restroom stops are built into the drive each way. In the extremely rare event of a vehicle breakdown, a replacement is dispatched from Amman (2-hour response time to the Dead Sea area) and the operations team contacts your ship immediately.
10 to 11 hours door-to-door, from Aqaba Port pickup to port drop-off. The drive each way is approximately 3 hours (190 miles). At Bethany, you spend 1.5 hours. At Lot's Cave, you spend 45 minutes. At the Dead Sea, you spend 2.5 hours (lunch, float, mud, free time). The itinerary is designed for ships docking at 06:00 and departing at 19:00. For ships with different schedules, the itinerary is adjusted: earlier pickup for early docking, later return for late departure. Ships that depart before 18:00 cannot accommodate this excursion due to insufficient time.

Travelers with heart conditions or high blood pressure should limit their float to 15 minutes and avoid the mud treatment (heat exposure). Available whenever your cruise ship docks in Aqaba with a schedule that allows 10-11 hours (typically ships docking at 06:00 or earlier and departing at 19:00 or later). Offered year-round, seven days a week. Best months: March through May and September through November, when temperatures are 65-80 degrees Fahrenheit and walking conditions are ideal. June through August is hot (85-105 degrees Fahrenheit) but manageable with early starts and frequent hydration. December through February is mild (50-65 degrees Fahrenheit) and offers the most peaceful site visits (fewer crowds at Bethany). Book at least 14 days in advance. For large cruise groups (20+), book 30 days in advance.
Full payment required at booking. Cancellations more than 14 days before receive 90% refund (10% processing fee). Cancellations 7-14 days before receive 50% refund. Cancellations less than 7 days are non-refundable but transferable to another passenger on the same cruise. If your ship changes port or cancels the Aqaba stop, full credit valid 24 months issued. If your ship arrives late and the excursion cannot proceed, 75% refund issued and a shortened alternative (Bethany only or Dead Sea only) is offered. This excursion is partially accessible to travelers with limited mobility. Bethany Beyond the Jordan has paved paths and wheelchair rental ($15). Lot's Cave requires a 15-minute uphill walk on gravel and may not be suitable for wheelchair users or those with significant mobility limitations (these travelers can rest at the vehicle). The Dead Sea resort is fully accessible with ramps, accessible restrooms, and beach wheelchairs. The vehicle can accommodate folding wheelchairs. Please disclose all accessibility needs at booking so we can confirm arrangements and assign an appropriate guide.

If your ship arrives more than 1 hour late, the itinerary is compressed: Lot's Cave may be skipped, and Bethany and the Dead Sea are prioritized. If your ship departs earlier than 18:00, this excursion is not feasible, and the Petra Shore Excursion (JJ-SHORE-040) or the Aqaba City Break (JJ-SHORE-042) is recommended instead. We have never had a passenger miss a ship, but we prioritize safety over sightseeing.
The vehicle is a spacious, air-conditioned minivan or sedan with comfortable seats, ample legroom, and a cooler with drinks. Two restroom stops are built into each direction. The scenery along the Dead Sea highway is dramatic: desert valleys, mountain ranges, and the Dead Sea itself become visible as you descend. Your guide provides commentary on the geology, history, and biblical significance of the landscape. Most travelers find the drive engaging rather than tiring. If you are prone to motion sickness, medication is recommended.
Full immersion baptism can be arranged through the churches at Bethany, but it requires advance coordination with church authorities and is not part of the standard shore excursion. If you wish to be baptized, contact Jordan Journey at least 30 days in advance. A separate donation to the church is customary ($50-100). Baptismal vow renewal (non-immersion) can be arranged on-site with your guide as a reflective moment. Please inform us at booking if you have spiritual objectives so we can coordinate appropriately.
At Bethany, modest clothing is required: shoulders and knees must be covered (both men and women). A light scarf for women is appreciated but not mandatory. At the Dead Sea, wear your swimsuit under your clothes for easy changing. The resort provides towels and changing rooms. After floating, rinse thoroughly with fresh water (provided at the resort beach) to remove the salt. Do not shave within 24 hours of floating: the salt will sting open skin.
The Dead Sea float is safe for most travelers, but precautions apply. Do not float if you have open cuts or wounds (the salt will sting intensely). Do not get water in your eyes (it is extremely painful; rinse immediately with fresh water). Limit your float to 20 minutes to avoid dehydration. Pregnant women should consult their physician before floating. Travelers with high blood pressure or heart conditions should limit their float to 10-15 minutes and avoid the hot mud treatment. The resort has medical staff on-site and eyewash stations at the beach.

This heritage excursion covers three distinct experiences (biblical, archaeological, and natural) with a 3-hour drive each way. It is longer, more diverse, and more physically demanding. Choose Petra if you want the single most famous Jordan experience. Choose this heritage excursion if you want variety, biblical depth, and the unique Dead Sea float. If your ship is in port for two days, you can do both.
